The Ivy Tech Community College Phlebotomy Technician Program requires 17 credit hours of completed coursework before students can attempt to pass the national phlebotomy certification exam. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the vascular system, medical terminology and simple procedures, venipuncture, capillary draws, and interpersonal patient communications.

The number of credits required for the Phlebotomy Technician Program do not include the College Preparation courses. Before entering into this class, students are required to take a college readiness exam, ensuring they are up-to-speed with core classes that are an integral part of this certification course.

Students in this course will learn the basics of phlebotomy, such as venipuncture, capillary draws, proper medical procedures, medical jargon, and processing and transportation of important bloodwork.

Their phlebotomy training course consists of in-class training (bookwork, hands-on training, and practical exam) with several day, evening, and weekend courses to fit any schedule. The course covers hands-on training and all the skill necessary to help you become a certified phlebotomy technician in the medical field. Prerequisites include:

1. Must be 18 years or older
2. Must prove you are a high school graduate or equivalent

In Training College divides their Phlebotomy Technician Training Program into two parts. Part one consists of classroom lectures and hands-on lab instructions that level out to 64 hours of credited work. Part two is a minimum 120 hours of clinical experience at local, approved medical facilities. For the clinical externship, students will be required to complete a minimum of 25 successful 25 dermal punctures and 100 successful, unassisted venipunctures.

For students seeking to bulk up their potential career as a phlebotomist, there are additional classes for additional fees, such as CPR training and TB certification. Upon completion of the ITC Phlebotomy Technician Training Program, students will be eligible to become certified in phlebotomy after taking, and passing, the national phlebotomy certification exam. The success of this exam will open proverbial doors for new phlebotomists, allowing them to step into entry-level positions at varying medical centers.

While the Phlebotomy Technician Training Program from VINU does not provide direct certification, the course is designed to prepare phlebotomist hopefuls for the national phlebotomy certification exam, as well as an entry-level career in the medical profession.

This phlebotomy training programs runs the length of 15 weeks, which equals out to around 90 classroom hours. Students will learn through hands-on lab studies, as well as classroom lectures, and some clinical experience.
