Western Dakota Tech includes a 9-month long diploma Phlebotomy-Laboratory assistant program among its various offerings. This program grooms students to become competent in the roles of a laboratory assistant and phlebotomist.

Among the responsibilities of a Phlebotomy Technician are:
• Collection, handling, transport, and processing of blood samples and other specimen for analysis in the laboratory.
• Identification and selection of additives, supplies, and equipment to be used in collection of blood.
• Understand and identify the various influences that impact specimen collection techniques and test results.
• Recognizing and appreciating the significance of collection of specimen within the overall system of patient care.
• Adherence to safety procedures and policies as well as infection control.
• Monitoring control of quality, ensuring that quality is within the set limits.
• Exhibiting good communication skills with peers, patients, other health care professionals and the general public as a whole.

What is the responsibility of a phlebotomist? A phlebotomist is assigned to take a donor’s or patient’s blood within a medical setting like blood banks, hospitals, laboratories, and others for analysis. The responsibility also encompasses needle insertion into veins for collection of blood into bags or tubes, swabbing the puncture areas with disinfectant, locating accessible veins for venipuncture, application of tourniquets on arms, etc. The phlebotomy program offered by Southeast Tech is a perfect cross-over course for those taking Nuclear Medicine.

In order to be eligible to join the phlebotomy program of Southeast Tech, applicants need to undergo drug screenings and background check.

*As part of the Federal Regulation, the school is required by the US Dep. of Education to provide graduates of the phlebotomy program gainful employment information.
