What is a Phlebotomy Technician? The primary job of a phlebotomist is to draw blood from a patient for laboratory analysis, research or donation. At the Austin Community College (ACC), we offer a Phlebotomy Technician Certificate program in the course of one semester. In this program, students will learn the various theories and principles in phlebotomy within the classroom setting and then apply them in real-life settings via their clinical. After completing the phlebotomy exams, students can then apply for work, some even proceed to the 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology while they work as a phlebotomist.

These are the Phlebotomy skills that you will gain at ACC:
• The knowhow for common lab tests like pregnancy testing, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, fecal occult blood, urinalysis dipstick, and manual hematocrit.

The Phlebotomy Technology training program provided by the Weatherford College follows the Accepted Standard of Care and Laboratory Standards Institute Guidelines in the Phlebotomy Profession. Once you are a phlebotomy graduate from this school, it is guaranteed that you are well-trained to become exemplary phlebotomists ready to serve in blood collection sites or clinical laboratories with the necessary and appropriate skills, plus the practical and theoretical laboratory experience.

The phlebotomy technician course makes up 16 weeks of courses which is equivalent to one semester. Eight weeks of this will make use of on campus clinical simulations, laboratory, and lectures. The next eight weeks is dedicated to off campus clinical rotations at a laboratory collection center or in a hospital laboratory.

Once you finish all requirements of the phlebotomy course, you will be awarded with a lifetime Phlebotomy certificate. If you want to be recognized as a phlebotomist nationally, then you would need to undergo the national phlebotomy licensure examination.
